Intro to Journaling Episode https://youtu.be/_NvWo2lUwdU ๐ก Help your child connect with nature and develop art skills! ๐ก It's easy for a kid to think everything "comes from the store." Fully stocked shelves make it seem like everything is available in an infinite supply. But when they are able to create their own art supplies, they become that much more aware how much work and resources go into everything we use, even something as lighthearted as a kid's paint set. In this video, Astrid explains how she has learned to create some of her own watercolor paints by gathering leftover nut shells, and boiling them in water and adding gum arabic. The materials are widely available, but alternatives are suggested. This is a different kind of reading task than what kids get reading novels or short stories. There is a particular emphasis on following instructions carefully, while observing the effects of each step. Furthermore, by gathering the materials themselves, as well as putting the final product to use in their own artwork, it creates a sense of ownership to the whole process. ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐พ๐๐๐๐ The focus of each episode of Astrid's Journal is to help students build strong foundational skills, meeting the Reading Standards for the Common Core for English Language Arts (Literature and Writing) for grades 3-5. Please see the attached PDF "Activity Sheet" that includes a variety of enrichment activities to extend the learning experience for the above mentioned areas, as well as writing exercises. Students will get experience reflecting on what they have read, as well as producing their own work through a series of journaling prompts for each episode. Note the interdisciplinary nature of the exercises, including math as well as language arts.
