Many professional chemists look back to their childhood experiences in the kitchen, mixing up cakes, as the start of their hands-on scientific skills. This is a different kind of reading task than what kids get reading novels or short stories. There is a particular emphasis on proportions, timings, and ordering of events. Together with careful observation of temperature, color changes, etc., this makes this activity truly interdisciplinary. Not only are kids developing their English Language skills, but also math and science. 𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝙄𝙉𝙎𝙏𝙍𝙐𝘾𝙏𝙊𝙍𝙎 The focus of each episode of Astrid's Journal is to help students build strong foundational skills, meeting the Reading Standards for the Common Core for English Language Arts (Literature and Writing) for grades 3-5. Please see the attached PDF "Activity Sheet" that includes a variety of enrichment activities to extend the learning experience for the above mentioned areas, as well as writing exercises. Students will get experience reflecting on what they have read, as well as producing their own work through a series of journaling prompts for each episode. Note the interdisciplinary nature of the exercises, including history, geography, and math as well as language arts.
